On Tuesday, the Human Rights Campaign declared a state of emergency for the LGBTQ+ community statewide. With more than 417 anti-LGBTQ bills being introduced by Republicans to Congress already this year, according to the ACLU. 75+ bills have passed so far, including legislation that support curriculum censorship, prohibits drag performances, and making gender-affirming care inaccessible.
Lobbyist, right-winged groups that introduced many bills include Alliance Defending Freedom and Family Policy Alliance have spoken in response to the HRC announcement with disrespect and further noted their support and efforts to make these bills official. This is in contrast to more than half of Americans that support resources for the community including gender transition-related medical care for minors.
As rates of violence on trans youth have been higher than ever and books on queer experiences are getting ban state-by-state, active support is the most crucial step everyone can take to enact the allyship many people need in the community right now. Spaces and celebrations this year for Pride have also been more limited than predicted, and the forces to make queer visibility invisible, are not letting down easily.
As a concurring goal, you can fortunately join a local LGBTQ+ organization in California and become a volunteer or group advocate depending on their available opportunities to get involved with. Assistance roles you can obtain and make an impact on include making phone calls, contacting local lawmakers and congressional representatives, helping with future events of the organization, or joining a board committee along with other volunteers.
Community engagement is always appreciated, and it's a great way for you to connect with LGBTQ+ individuals in your area. To see a list of California organizations that assist LGBTQ+ groups, please click here:
